Andrzej Bobkowski

was a Polish writer, essayist and entrepreneur. He left Poland in March 1939. In 1940 he started writing his wartime notebooks, which he would continue until August 1944. After the war he boarded a ship bound for Guatemala, where he settled. For the rest of his life, he ran a shop selling airplane models (his life-time passion), writing occasionally.

In 1939, the 26-year-old Pole Andrzej Bobkowski found himself stranded in France. He started to keep a diary of his everyday experiences as an outsider in an occupied country. We present a selection of entries covering a bicycle trip from southern France to Paris.
